On June 23, 2024, we celebrated International Women Engineers Day, a vital opportunity to highlight the remarkable contributions of women in a traditionally male-dominated field. Since its inception in 2014, the day has served as a platform to promote gender equality in engineering and encourage young girls to consider careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
An inspiring round table to stimulate commitment
As part of this year's celebrations, our association, Girlsday237, in partnership with She Stem in Africa, organized a round table discussion on June 29, 2024. The theme of the event was "Being a woman engineer in 2024: training, career, challenges, personal and professional life balance", and brought together six exceptional women engineers, each bringing unique and inspiring perspectives on their journey.
These women engineers shared their experiences, covering topics ranging from the importance of continuing education to the challenges they face in an often unequal working environment. They discussed how they manage to balance their professional and personal lives, offering valuable advice to young women aspiring to follow in their footsteps.
The crucial role of mentors
One of the highlights of the round table was the emphasis placed on the importance of mentors. For young girls who dream of becoming engineers, having role models and mentors can make all the difference. Mentors provide not only technical and professional advice, but also the moral support and inspiration needed to navigate a complex and demanding field.
A call to action
International Women's Engineering Day is not just a celebration, but also a call to action. We must continue to encourage and support young girls to enter STEM careers. Associations like Girlsday237 and She Stem in Africa play a crucial role in this mission, organizing events, workshops and mentoring programs to inspire and guide the next generation of women engineers.
She reminded us all of the importance of diversity and inclusion in STEM, and the transformative impact mentors can have in the lives of young girls aspiring to become engineers. Let's continue to work together for a future where every girl has the opportunity to realize her dreams and contribute fully to the innovation and progress of our society.
